Preparation for Your Wedding Day – Real Important Questions

For most of our clients this is the first and hopefully only time to walk down the isle and exchange vows to seal their love eternally for ever and ever.  So naturally that comes with a ton of questions in preparation for your wedding day.  Just now a decade plus later into being a professional wedding photographer I’ve realized thesebrides and grooms need more info!  There is so much, so much that goes into each wedding, so much planning, so many choices.  They need help!  We get asked the questions the bridal magazines tell you to ask, and they make us giggle.  Truly because chatting about our gear will get you know where as most couples have no clue nor do they need to know what we shoot with, etc.  Jeff and I have always been very excited and open to help and do what we can for our clients leading up to their big day.  Let’s be honest, if you have a bad day then we have a bad day so together we’re going to make it a great day!

I’ve gone through some recent phone calls, texts and emails with brides and grooms and saved some of my favorite questions they’ve asked.  Mainly because they just got down to the nitty gritty super duper important stuff and stuff that you might not think about until the week of your big day.  Which could absolutely stress one out, the thought of waiting that long.  under the questions you’ll see some of the answers we provide.  Please note not all of these q&A’s may not pertain to your day, however we sure hope they help!

*Note some of these questions may not apply to your wedding day or won’t even pop into your head until we get much closer.  Either way this post should get your brains thinking about the preparation for your wedding day.

Q. How many photos will we end up with after the sessions (engagement and wedding)?

A. This answer varies.  We do not count the photos we take, nor do we shoot for a specific total.  At our engagement sessions on average you can expect around 150 – 200 images.  For weddings we typically deliver anywhere from 750 – 1200 images.  The amount varies based off of the time you have our team booked for or say you have a small or no bridal party, in this case you naturally would end up with a hundred or so less than a couple that has a big bridal party

Q. If we choose to do a first look should we have our friends and family present?

A. This is a tough one for us.  In all honestly this is a truly personal decision.  This moment you can’t get back.  It’s the time you’ve decided to shut the world out and have a moment with your future bride or groom, whether we are doing it to get the tears out of the way or because it just makes sense with your timeline there are a few things to consider.  When others are present, they pull out their cameras, they may even chatter or distract from the moment.  Many times we see less of a connection between the two actually getting married as lets face it, when extra eyeballs are around it sorta changes things.  Our straight forward answer: keep it intimate, your friends and family get to share the rest of the day with you, take a moment to fully take this all in.

Q.  Our second payment is due by the wedding week, can we pay the day of?

A. We do not mind at all if you want to hand us a credit card or check day of.  If this makes you more comfortable to handle your transaction in person then heck ya!  Let’s put that on the to do list for day of.  Our straight forward answer: handle it the week of sometime, things get busy and time starts to fly on your wedding day.  Why ad it to the list of things your brain has to hang on to when you already have so much going on.  Give us a call and we can handle it via phone, email etc.

Q. Can we provide a picture list of must hav’s for the day of, and family members we need portraits with?

A. For my full rant on this topic see a previous article here on how we feel 🙂 As far as family portraits we always feel a list is best.  This way you aren’t under pressure and running on low blood sugar because it’s time for dinner and you forget Aunt Margaret.  That would be a bummer and she would be sad.  So yes please send us a list of family members you would like to get photos with and we will make sure to check those off as we go.  Another way to make this part of the day run smooth is to have a friend or family member present that knows all the faces of these fine folks you’d like photos with.

Q. How many vendor meals do we need to provide?

A.  Depends on the package you purchased, if you look under the package details you will see how many vendors are included in your package.  If you are doing just photo with us then the number is two, if you are doing both photo and video then your head count is 4.  Unless you have a customized video which many of our clients do that may include drone coverage or something along those lines.  In that case there will be another or possibly two more.

Q. How long after my wedding will I have to wait before I have my photos?

A. Our typical turn around time is 3 weeks post wedding.  During peak wedding season (Spring and Fall) times may be closer to 45 days post wedding.  Once we have all the photos edited, we then upload them to, and you will receive a link with a unique download pin and you are off!

Q. Do you edit all of our photos?  How extensive is the editing?

A. We go through each and every photo we take!  The only photos we get rid of is if someone blinks or there are multiple of the same image.  Although we do edit all images given to our clients the “editing” we include is color correction, light clean up of skin, a few black and whites thrown in especially if we feel a certain image deserves it and we also like to do some really creative coloring etc on specific photos.  Extensive “editing” such as removing something from an image, major alterations to a body or face isn’t included.  Typically this isn’t something needed in wedding photography however if there is a specific alteration you are looking for just ask!  We want all the images you receive from us to be exactly what you want.

Q. Will a timeline be provided for my wedding day?

A. Every wedding is different, which means each one deserves it’s own unique timeline for the day and how it will flow.  Before your wedding we will establish an exact guideline for how we will be covering your day.  With you we will create a specific start time and go through all the details you have set up with your venue, hair and make up and DJ.  If you are booking photo and video with us, you will receive a very detailed outline to approve as we like to keep an open line of communication with our couples as to what each of our staff will be covering.  This way you will feel at ease knowing every inch of your day is being covered and nothing will be missed!

Q. I noticed it states no other photographers can be shooting in our agreement?  Does this mean family and friends can’t take photos on their phones etc?

A.  For the sake of making things flow as simple as possible we have this stated in our agreement with our couples.  Of course friends and family are free to click away off to the side while your day unfolds.  What we are really trying to steer clear from in this clause is the friend or family member that has a nice camera standing next to us asking for the group in the photo to look at their camera, etc.  This is a major distraction, slows down the process and takes attention off the cameras everyone should be looking at.  We aren’t concerned about someone getting better images than us, we are concerned it will add time to an already busy schedule, and have seen many times over it. It also completely frustrate folks when there is too many devices to look and smile at.

Having a great time at your wedding and enjoying each and every second is what we hope and want for our couples.  These are just a handful of questions that come up at almost every wedding we shoot, if there are topics we didn’t cover please let us know!  We want your experience working with us to go as smooth as possible and hope to answer any and all concerns right away.  Please feel free to reach out to Jeff or myself or make a suggestion below in the comments.
